What Is a Roller Burnished Tube?

 
A roller burnished tube — also called a rolled tube — is a tube whose bore has been finished by pressing hardened rollers against the surface under high load. The process does not remove material; it displaces it. The peaks of the machined surface are pressed down into the valleys, leaving a smooth, dense, work-hardened layer.
 
 

How Roller Burnishing Works

 
The burnishing head carries rollers that ride over the bore surface as the tube turns or the head travels. The load is high enough to deform the steel plastically, not elastically. Three things happen at the surface: the roughness peaks flatten, the surface pores close, and the material just beneath the surface gets harder from cold working.
 
Because nothing is cut, there are no chips to handle, no coolant swarf to dispose of, and no tool wear in the usual sense. The pass is fast, which is why burnishing shows up wherever barrels are made in quantity.

Applications of Roller Burnished Tube

 
Hydraulic cylinder barrels — especially high-cycle production lines — pneumatic cylinders, shock absorber tubes, pump barrels, bearing seats and any bore where a low-friction, wear-resistant surface pays off. Roller burnished barrels are also a favourite in the skive-and-roller-burnish (SRB) combination, where the tube is cut and finished in one machine, as on Tengye's 9-metre SRB line.
 
 

When to Specify Roller Burnished Tube

 
If you are producing cylinders in volume, roller burnishing is usually the economical choice: fast, chip-free, and it gives you a harder surface than honing. If your design needs the absolute tightest geometry correction — for example, correcting an out-of-round bore from another operation — honing still has the edge. For most cylinder barrels, though, rolled is plenty and cheaper to run.
